How to Setup your Ham Radio Transceiver for Optimal Performance (ft. Kenwood TS-590SG & FT-818ND)
Переглядів 45 тис.5 років тому
In this follow up video, Jarrad VK3BL demonstrates how to get the best Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) out of a traditional superhet transceiver. The transceiver used for the video is the classic and current production Kenwood TS-590SG, and the Yaesu FT-818ND is briefly shown to indicate the advice is consistent across superhet transceivers. We hope you enjoy the video and advice despite the low li...

Icom IC-9700 Who should buy one, and who shouldn't!
Переглядів 31 тис.5 років тому
In this video, we cover who should buy the IC-9700 and who shouldn't! As lovely as the IC-9700 radio is, it isn't for everyone, so we've quickly gone through where the radio excels and where it doesn't. You'll have to excuse Jarrad VK3BL on this one, as I'm suffering from a bit of the old 'summer flu' and have a croaky voice! For those wanting to see the IC-9700 being used to work satellites, h...
Icom IC-9700 Haters' Delight? VK3BL discusses Measurement & Statistics
Переглядів 11 тис.5 років тому
Being a UHF (1.2GHz / 23cm) transceiver, the performance characteristics of the Icom IC-9700 are inherently hard to quantify. We've noticed that a few reports of 'frequency stability' issues have been circulating social media, so Jarrad VK3BL decided to take the opportunity to discuss the inherent difficulty of measuring 23cm equipment, and also why Rate My Radio shies away from publishing meas...
Icom IC-9700 First Play
Переглядів 40 тис.5 років тому
We pop the IC-9700 on the shack bench and turn it on for the first time! We cover the basics, such as the bands covered, power output and compare the chassis to its twin the IC-7300. We go through quite a few of the menus briefly noting a few differences but overall the interface should be familiar to anyone used to an IC-7300 or IC-7610. The 'OVF' light makes a surprise showing on 2M straight ...

Yaesu FT70D vs Yaesu FT2D Review
Переглядів 16 тис.5 років тому
We compare Yaesu's 'Premium' FT2D to the 'Entry Level' FT70D with a surprising result: Jarrad VK3BL prefers the FT70D! There are some caveats of course, but in our opinion Yaesu kicked a goal with the FT70D whilst the FT2D fails the 'buyers remorse' test for the most part - watch the video to find out why! We're interested to hear your thoughts - please leave them below :) 73, Jarrad VK3BL & th...

RMR Project 1: Tube Linear Restoration Heathkit SB-1000
Переглядів 8 тис.5 років тому
Jarrad VK3BL - a secret lover of large glass envelope tubes - has always wanted a linear featuring the mighty Eimac 3-500Z tube. When a Heathkit SB-1000 came up for sale that needed a few repairs, we just couldn't turn it down. The Heathkit SB-1000 is basically an Ameritron AL-80A; this means not only are full build instructions available from Heathkit, but any and all parts are still available...

Whilst we haven't had a chance to do an extensive review yet, Jarrad shares his first thoughts regarding the Ailunce HD1; notably its ease of use, excellent audio and fantastic feature set. Ubiquiti IsoStation vs PrismStation: Battle of the Horns
Kenwood for me thanks.
I love the curved meters on the 7610 and it would have be nice to have this option on the 7300. The 7610 looks impressive but I don’t need two receivers, The 7300 is my first and only HF rig.
can you tell me the model of the cable to connect the pr781 to the 7610?
Has anyone discovered the maximum distance you can put between the head and main unit using ethernet calbe? thanks for this interesting video btw 😁📶
What power supply did you use for all that stuff 5 years ago?
I remember hearing the TV screen when I was a kid with fresh ears, my slightly younger relatives said the same thing. Are there any modern technologies for public use that make high frequency noises that kids and humans with good ears can pick up?
Lmao..comparison ts 590 and 7300...duuuuum 7300 will be totally better
This is unfair! To have two Yaesu radios on top of the two Icom radios! Most of the people will say, the Icom radios are the better radios, ... ! Even if it is not true, ... ! (Hi Hi ! ! !) I have a FT-817 (made in 2001, now 'out of order', a retired radio now) and a fairly new FT-818ND, now replacing the 'retired' one, ... ! Tnx fr the test, es gs dx de ... Markus - db9pz (Loc: JN39fq - 3miles/5km east of LX)
The 781 was made for icom radios , This is what I was told from the main man Bob Heil , So it would work better on any icom radio . The pr40 works better on other radios like the kenwood & FT 9000mp & others .
Nice to see you again! I hope to work you on the air sometime soon from the USA.
I have this problem on my new icom id 52E
no entiendo nada. soy español y no encuentro un video de habla hispana...todo esta en ingles que mala suerte....
Hello Jared, first off I really appreciate your informative videos! On the 7300 monitor function, as we know doesn't give the true representation of the TX audio, while compression levels are set per the manual, even sometimes lower (5-7db on COMP meter), the monitor audio sounds tight and distorted...is this also inaccurate as far as hearing the raspy sound and distortion with only 5-10 db of compression? I haven't had a chance to listen to a web sdr as of yet. Thanks!
Been to Cambodia, stinkin humid hot place,,, good luck with your new life there.
The amount of bandwidth used is incredible - 40 Mhz across the band per channel. So much data!
Hey Jarrad, great to see you again - hopefully you'll be on SSB as well 😀 de Andy VK2JXA
I sure will be, want to do some live casts... need to figure out this FT-891... wonderful radio but I've been an Icom guy a while! Definitely going to do a review on it!
Looking forward to learning a load about life in XU7, cheers Brenton vk3cm and Samantha vk3hwk Tangambalanga North East Victoria Australia 🥰🥰🥰🥰🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
Hi Jarrad, do you know of a way you can use data modes for the 7610 on the remote computer using RS-BA1 with the 7610 connected via just the Network connection? have you done this? Thanks Regards Nigel ZL2SEA
I have done it from memory, but its much easier and reliable contact wise to connect remotely to a computer to run digi
Great radio and great job sir!
Glad you are on the air! I hope to work you soon, I have never worked Cambodia. Robert K5TPC
Please feel free to contact me for a sked, I would love to give you an ATNO.
Nice to see you again Hope all is well
Life has its ups and downs but getting to play as XU7AGA again is always a blast and I've got my health :). Hope all is well for you best 73!
Glad to see you Jerrard, hope all is well with you 👍
Indeed it is, having a blast playing in a rare country and have been working on my health/fitness while I waited for the papers. Best I've been in years :). All the best to you and yours, 73.
Very nice 73 Kurt Ex XU7AMZ. now HS0ZBS
Great to see you doing well Jarrod! Hope XU7 is working out for you as your new QTH.
Great that it finally came through hope to connect you down the line 73
welcome back waiting for video of antenna to load :)
Haha we got the job done on 10 with 100w and a wire ;)
Great video!!! Robert K5TPC
Thanks 👍
I sold my 101D in favour of a Flex6600M - Bad move !!! - I'm now selling the Flex and going back to the 101D !!
I use the mini circuits ZFSC-2-4-S+ WITH SMA connectors. Works great and very small.
Added mini circuits .2 - 1000 Mhz spliter to rx out, then #2 out to rx in and #1 to Airspy HF in running SDR console with RX Matrix
Add a splitter to the RX out and then one 3db out to rx in and the other to the SDR
What is the model number on the FT2D charging cradle?
Hi Nice video!!! What shld my millisecond delay be set for on my Icom 7300, using the Heathkit, sb1000 tube amp? Im guessing(by ur video, 25 ms??) Thanks Billy
Thanks Best 73!
@@RateMyRadio Question Is there a way to set the fwd power meter so I can view actual power(esp with my amp connected)while transmitting?? The only way that I have been able to accomplish this is to switch my Icom 7300 to either fm or rtty. I can then see 450 watts out. But if on ssb, the mfj shows fwd= 24.0 Thanku William
Old video but good to see a bit of real engineering - thank you. It is often quoted that the using this filter with an 817 gives the equivalent of a 2-3dB improvement on Tx. Did your numbers back this up ? Can an electret microphone be used with the Collins filter without distortion? How much improvement in Tx signal do you get when combining this filter with a speech compressor....or does the benefit of the collins filter equate to that of a compressor ?
good job ,totally agree. 73,s
Hi What is suggested for audio output settings for AM? Thanks William
I am looking for a quiet Fan replacement for the SB-1000, any ideas?
Thank you for the good information it was a great help.
5 years old and still super helpful for us noobs, thank you.
Modern hams don't realize how GREAT we have it in terms of the performance of modern equipment; complaing about 30 Hz. drift on 144 MHz., or 300 Hz. on 1.2 GHz?! The first radio I ever got on the air with as a newly licensed Technician back in 1969 was a PolyComm 6 at the high school radio club where I got my license; the first radio I bought brand new was a Lafayette HA-460. Both radios were vacuum tube 6 meter AM transceivers which when operated on their internal VFO's (vs. crystal control) routinely drifted 50 KHz. (or more!). When the dial graduation marks were only EVERY 50 KHZ., that drift amount didn't seem all that bad. Of course, AM tuning is nowhere as critical as SSB, but older SSB transceivers drifted as well. If your THAT concerned about the IC-9700's stability, install the Leo Bodner GPS lock board (I plan to do mine in the near future); mainly considering for best frequenct accuracy in planning to try EME in the neard future. But even as it is? I LOVE my IC-9700! 😁
Do you know about Icom F6022?
My AL80A has lower output on 160 meters than other bands.
The MFJ-1708SDR is not supposed to be a power splitter, it's a switch that disconnects the SDR and sorts its antenna input to ground and works fine but Chinese tx rx switch you can buy online now are much better i have been using the Chinese one for over a year with no problems at all.
Looks very nice... I have IC 7300 and looks for me - they keep almost the same operation methodes at IC R8600. It's true it's very easy to operate - like smartphone. Ive never used User Manual for IC7300 even I own it 4 years. The only one big problem for me in terms of IC8600 is... Price 😢
Why is the squelch combined? Does it have to be technically?
The A/B was obvious within the first 2 seconds. I didn't even have to listen to the "B" mic. The 781 is optimized around the (relatively confined) frequency range of 100 Hz to 3kHz, which is what you want for HF audio. The PR-40, on the other hand, is designed for a much larger frequency response and is used by bloggers, musicians, broadcasters, and just about anyone needing high fidelity recording. All that said, I do have a PR-40 that I use on my ICOM IC-7200. I run it through a W2IHY 8-Band EQ to bring up the HF audio range response and it does quite well. It's far easier to EQ the PR-40 to sound like the 781 than vice versa.
i would love to own this cause im into this more than i was before
I would like to see a video on setting up repeaters and seting up tones then saving it all to a memory channel On the Icom 7610
I’m in the frame for the ICOM and reviews like this help. Waffle away lad, I bet you hold a great natter on the air and when I’m set up maybe I’ll catch you, hopefully, and we can solve the problems of the universe 😊. I like ICOM … I just do,,, ??? Must be Jungian hihihi. There are things that could be tweaked as you say, the notch filter is one that you and others have pointed out. I’ve just come back to radio after a massive absence and guys like you are part of my re education. BTW just as an info, I follow everyone using the transcript on the video,,, it really didn’t like your accent…hahaha, thing is, it would bust if it tried to translate mine 😮. Thanks for the review… mind how you go. g0uvl 73.
Awesome video, love mine, also have a icom 718, with a 7300 hand mic, they all think LM on the 7300, would really like to see you do a review on the 718,73s brother, kb0uzz
